Welcome
Welcome to the Computer Science Department at SUNY Potsdam. Visit the links on the left navigation window for more information about the Department's programs, activities, and people.
Employment prospects for computer science graduates remains strong into the next decade.
Today, computers are finding their way into every facet of modern life. Once so large as to fill a room, a computer can now fit on your thumbnail. Computers operate telephone, utility and communications systems. They are the driving force behind cars and cameras, banking and commerce, science and communications, and public and private security -- behind much of the modern world.
Computer science deals with: the nature of and limits to computation; the architecture of computer systems, networks, devices, and languages, and their abstractions; the design of hardware and software systems as they apply to human endeavors such as scientific inquiry, information acquisition, visualization, language, and leisure; and the engineering of complex software systems. A Computer Science degree at SUNY Potsdam prepares you for a rewarding career as a computer professional -- where you apply your computer science knowledge and expereince towards improving our lives -- or for further study in graduate school.
Through its curriculum and extra-curricular activities, the CS Department emphasizes the development of your problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills. As a CS major at SUNY Potsdam, you will study computer science from both a theoretical and practical point of view. Your CS courses will extend from classrooms to computer laboratories to individual and team projects. Your capstone experience, typically a significant team project or internship, will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to apply your knowledge to the solution of real-world problems.
You can enter the CS program with little or no previous computing experience. While a solid foundation in high school science, mathematics, and writing is your best preparation for the study of computer science, we can accommodate a diverse variety of backgrounds. You are welcome as an incoming freshman, a transfer student, or as a change of major.
